Pool Safety and Guidelines

At our facility, safety and enjoyment go hand in hand. To ensure a great experience for all, please follow these guidelines:

  • Certified Lifeguards on Duty: A certified lifeguard is always present to ensure your safety. Our pool operates with a 24:1 patron-to-lifeguard ratio, with a maximum capacity of 50 people in the pool area.
  • Rule Enforcement: Our lifeguards are here to help. They will kindly enforce pool rules to keep everyone safe. If rules are not followed, patrons will be asked to leave the pool area.
  • Shower Before Entering: For everyone’s health and comfort, patrons MUST shower before entering the pool.
  • Swimwear Requirements: Proper swimwear is required. Cotton attire is not allowed in the pool—no exceptions.
  • Lap Swim: Reserved for swimmers aged 13 and older. See rules and policies below.
  • Aquatics Group Fitness: We offer a variety of aquatics group fitness classes. During which, all patrons in the pool must participate in the class or exit the pool.
  • Children’s Swim Rules:
    • Children 8 and older must be signed in by a parent and pass a swim test by the lifeguard to swim without a parent during fun swim.
    • Children 11 and older may join Aqua Aerobics classes with a parent.
  • Infant Swim Requirements: All babies must wear swim diapers or rubber pants—no disposable diapers allowed.
  • Safety Practices: Extended breath-holding or hyperventilating activities and competitions are not permitted.
  • Guest Passes: No guest passes will be issued for use of the pool during open or family fun swim times. Individual guests are welcome to try out any of our group classes or to swim during lap swim.

Thank you for helping us create a safe, enjoyable environment for everyone. We look forward to seeing you at the pool!

Our Pool

20-Yard, 4-Lane Indoor Pool

Ease into our indoor pool, perfect for laps, leisure, and everything in between. Our pool features:

  • Heated: Enjoy a pleasant year-round 85ºF as you swim or participate in our various aquatic activities.
  • Variable Depths: Ranging from 3 1/2 feet to 9 feet deep, our pool accommodates swimmers of all levels.
  • Accessibility: We are proud to offer an accessible chair lift and stair entry, ensuring everyone can enjoy our pool.

Lap Swim Policy
To ensure fair access for all swimmers, please follow our updated lap lane sharing procedure:

  • If all lanes are occupied and a new swimmer arrives:
Lane 4 (by the windows) will be the first to accept a second swimmer
Lane 1 (with the steps) is the second to accept a second swimmer
Lanes 2 and 3 (the center lanes and narrowest) will be used next, as needed

These guidelines are based on lane width to provide the most comfortable shared swimming experience.

Lane sharing is expected when necessary.
If a swimmer is unwilling to share their lane when asked, a 15-minute timer will be set. Once that time is up, the lane will be made available to the waiting swimmer—regardless of how long the current swimmer has been in the pool.

The Y believes it's important for everyone to be safe and comfortable around water.
We offer Safety Around Water programs and swim lessons in all communities — especially those in which kids are at a higher risk of drowning.

Did you know?

9 IN 10 U.S. parents see swimming as a key life skill for children, on par with first aid skills or being able to prepare a simple meal.
24% of U.S. parents have low confidence with water activities or bodies of water. And much higher in our minority communities.
3 IN 10 U.S. parents state that water safety isn’t a priority due to affordability concerns.
As "America's swim instructor," the YMCA teaches children of all ages and from all backgrounds that water should be fun, not feared, if you know how to stay safe in and around water.
Drowning can happen nearly anywhere with standing water — but as a parent or caregiver, you can’t keep your kids sidelined. By equipping kids with the tools they need to be confident in and around water, they’ll be able to reap the health benefits of exercise, bond with family and friends and take pride in their new skills — safely.

The Rome-Floyd YMCA offers affordable year round swim lessons.
